Peach State Opera presents Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata. Come see why this is one of the most popular and frequently produced operas of all time. It is a tale of a passionate love between a courtesan and her secret admirer, an overprotective father, a short lived reunion, and a tragic end. This timeless opera centers around Violetta, a woman of great intelligence and beauty of spirit crushed by the social prejudices of the time; Alfredo, a young provincial nobleman who has long adored Violetta from afar; and Germont, Alfredo’s disapproving father who persuades Violetta to leave Alfredo to protect his son’s public image. She reluctantly returns to her old life. Act III shows that Violetta’s health is quickly declining. Germont, full of remorse, tells his son the truth about why she left. Alfredo rushes to her for a beautiful reunion, before consumption finally claims her life.
La traviata contains some of Verdi’s most beloved tunes, including Violetta’s first-act hymn to freedom, “Sempre libera,” as well as her tragic farewell to life in the last act, “Addio, del passato bei sogni,” and the most irresistible of all of Verdi’s drinking songs, “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici.” Join Peach State Opera for an unforgettable afternoon of romance and regret, wrapped up in some of the world’s most beautiful music, sung in English.
